The right liner does more than keep a planter looking tidy. It helps hold soil where it belongs, reduces water loss through gaps in timber construction, and limits the damp conditions that can lead to rot. In a wooden planter, that separation can make a meaningful difference to service life, especially when the planter is exposed to regular rain, irrigation, and temperature changes.

A liner is not a substitute for drainage. Plants still need a route for excess water to leave the planter. Think of the liner as moisture management and container protection, while drainage holes and an elevated base handle water exit and airflow.

How to install a planter liner correctly

Place the liner into the planter and ease it into the base and corners. It should sit against the interior without being pulled tight enough to tear when soil is added. Another issue is placing gravel in the bottom of a planter as a drainage fix. Gravel does not replace drainage holes, and it can reduce the depth available for roots. A properly aligned liner, free-draining potting mix, and clear drainage openings are the more reliable approach.

It is also worth checking the liner during major seasonal planting changes.
