A patio stain usually starts small - a dark ring under a favorite pot, a rusty shadow on concrete, a chalky white crust that will not wash away. When water drains from the potting mix, it rarely comes out clean. It can carry fine soil, compost tea, dissolved fertilizer salts, and organic compounds from bark or wood-based mixes. If that moisture gets trapped under the planter instead of evaporating quickly, it leaves residue behind. This kind of staining is usually worst when drainage is frequent. Overwatered plants, heavy rain, or pots without proper internal separation between soil and the planter base can all contribute.
Mineral deposits
If you see a chalky white residue, that is often mineral buildup. Hard water, dissolved salts from fertilizer, and minerals leaching from concrete or clay can all leave deposits as water evaporates. These stains can look harmless at first, but they tend to layer up and become more difficult to clean.

Metal planters, steel feet, screws, brackets, and even wire plant stands can produce rust marks. Once water sits around exposed metal, oxidation begins. That rust then transfers to the patio surface below, often creating orange or reddish-brown streaks.
This is one of the more stubborn stain types, especially on concrete and stone. It also tends to spread beyond the exact footprint of the pot because rust-colored water can run outward during rain.
Tannin and organic stains
Wood planters, half barrels, bark-heavy potting mixes, and leaf litter can release tannins. These natural compounds often create tea-colored or dark brown stains. They are common under timber planters and around areas where wet organic matter collects and breaks down.
Tannin stains can be surprising because they may appear even if the planter itself is in good condition. The stain is often coming from the wet organic material inside or around it, not just from the planter walls.
Algae and mildew discoloration
Sometimes the "stain" is actually growth. If water remains trapped under a planter, the shaded damp area can develop algae, mildew, or biofilm. This is more likely on patios with limited sun or poor drainage. The mark may look green, black, or dark brown, and it can make the surface slippery as well as unattractive.
Why some patios stain more easily than others
The patio material plays a major role. Concrete is one of the biggest trouble spots because it is porous unless properly sealed. It absorbs water and whatever that water carries with it. Managing what happens inside the planter matters just as much. If potting mix sits directly in the planter with poor internal drainage, excess water can stay in contact with the base for too long.
