The right setup depends on your planter material, where it will sit, and what you intend to grow. A wooden planter needs different protection from a concrete or plastic one, while a small herb planter has very different soil demands from a large square planter holding a shrub. The principles are consistent: keep excess water moving, create airflow, protect the surface below, and give plant roots enough room to grow.

Start With the Site and the Planter Size

Before adding soil, place the empty planter where it will live. A filled square planter is heavy, particularly when wet, and moving it later can damage both the container and the surface beneath it. Check the sun pattern over a full day if possible. Full-sun plants need six or more hours of direct light, while shade-loving plants can scorch in an exposed west-facing position.

Square planters are especially useful for defining corners, framing doors, or creating repeated planting along a deck. Leave enough clearance around each planter for watering, sweeping, and airflow. Raise the Planter Before You Fill It

Without a barrier, wood repeatedly absorbs and releases water, which can lead to swelling, cracking, and rot over time.

A purpose-made planter liner separates damp soil from the planter walls while still allowing excess water to drain. It also keeps soil from washing through gaps in slatted or timber designs. Fit the liner before adding anything else. Press it into the corners and along the sides without stretching it tightly. A liner should follow the planter shape, but it should not be pulled taut enough to tear when soil settles. Most importantly, do not block the drainage holes. If the liner covers them, make matching openings where needed so water can leave the planter. Get Drainage Right Without Adding a Gravel Layer

There is no need to fill the bottom with gravel, rocks, broken pots, or packing peanuts. These materials do not improve drainage in the way many gardeners assume. Choose Potting Mix for the Plants You Are Growing

Garden soil is usually too dense for containers. In a square planter, it compacts over time, drains poorly, and limits oxygen around the roots. Start with a high-quality potting mix formulated for containers. It should hold enough moisture for plants to use while staying open enough for excess water to drain.

For flowers, foliage plants, and mixed seasonal displays, a general premium potting mix is usually suitable. For succulents and Mediterranean herbs, use a faster-draining mix. Fill the planter gradually and lightly firm the mix as you go. Do not pack it down hard. Leave about one to two inches between the soil surface and the planter rim. This watering space prevents runoff and makes it easier to soak the root zone evenly.

Square planters look best when the planting has room to develop. Overfilling creates an instant full appearance, but crowded roots compete for water and nutrients and may decline after a few weeks. Feed container plants during active growth because nutrients wash out with regular watering.
