The best option depends on the material and construction of your planter. Wooden troughs benefit most visibly because prolonged contact with wet compost can accelerate rot, discoloration, and splitting. A heavier liner provides a more dependable barrier, particularly in long rectangular planters holding substantial volumes of wet soil. It should also remain flexible enough to sit into corners without fighting the planter shape. That combination of toughness and flexibility is what separates a practical garden accessory from a short-lived workaround.

Material choices also have an environmental dimension. Rectangular planters usually have more internal surface area than round pots, including long seams where moisture can linger. Leaving a gap at the upper edge is generally fine if it stays above the soil line and does not expose timber to frequent splashing.
